Back-to-School Transitions Can Be Tough for Grieving Students

25 de agosto de 2026

As students head back to school, they are navigating new classrooms, teachers, friendships, and routines. While these transitions can be exciting, they can also be especially challenging for bereaved children and teens.

According to the Coalition to Support Grieving Students, a national partner of Judi’s House, grief does not end at a fixed point, and transitions such as starting a new school year can bring a child’s grief to the forefront again. A new school year may highlight the absence of a parent, sibling, or other important person, even years after a death has occurred.

At Judi’s House, we know grief can affect every part of a child’s life, including their experience at school. This back-to-school season, take a moment to explore and share this resource with your network. By equipping adults in a child’s life with knowledge and support, we can help grieving students feel seen, understood, and supported throughout the school year.
