Great.com Interviews Judi’s House About Equipping Children And Families to Overcome Grief
Ryan Nurse from Great.com interviewed Judi’s House as part of their ‘Great.com Talks With…’ podcast. This series is an antidote to negative news stories that aims to shed light on organizations and experts whose work is making a positive impact on the world.
We all experience grief in some form during our lives. A strong support network can give us strength and help us process our grief healthily. For grieving children, the stakes are higher and the potential damage posed by unaddressed grief more significant.
Micki Burns discussed the importance of supporting children and families through the grieving process.
Helping People Get Back On Their Feet After A Loss
Since its foundation in 2002, Judi’s House has helped over eleven thousand people experiencing loss. This works out as around fourteen thousand hours of service to the community in a typical year.
Micki explained that when a child experiences a significant loss in childhood or young adulthood, it can significantly derail their development, leading to depression, anxiety, inability to sustain relationships and inability to hold down a job.
That’s why Judi’s House has come up with a ten week program for individuals aged between three and twenty five. Bringing families together in an empathetic environment helps lessen the burden, nurture resilience and heal together.
Judi’s House also has its own evaluation and research arm – JAG Institute – which uses data on grief to help communities evaluate the impacts of unaddressed grief and improve the long-term outlook for grieving families.
