Judi’s House CEO Featured in Candlelight Magazine to Spotlight Childhood Grief Awareness Month
diciembre 12, 2025
Judi’s House is proud to share that CEO Micki Burns, PhD, was recently interviewed by Candlelight Magazine in a feature titled “CHILDREN’S STORIES… STILL UNFOLDING” by Becca McAuliffe. The article appears in the magazine’s Winter 2025 issue in honor of Childhood Grief Awareness Month (CGAM) taking place each November.
The interview highlights findings from the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM), developed by Judi’s House/JAG Institute in partnership with the New York Life Foundation, which reports that 1 in 11 U.S. children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18, totaling more than 6.4 million children nationwide.
With over 23 years of experience supporting grieving families, Dr. Burns spoke about how grief manifests differently for children depending on their age, relationship to the person who died, and circumstances of the loss. She emphasized the importance of developmentally informed support and the need for caregivers to stay present and connected.
“[Making] a conscious effort to put aside the technology, to put aside the news cycle, and just sit with a child and allow them to be with you. It doesn’t have to be a conversation about death. It can just be Monopoly, or it can just be swinging on the swings at the park,” Dr. Burns shared.
Dr. Burns also described Judi’s House’s individualized approach to care, including comprehensive assessments and age-appropriate therapeutic options such as play therapy, group sessions with peers, and family support.
