Donor Spotlight: Heather and Steve Young
Heather and Steve Young approach philanthropy with an open heart. For nearly 15 years, they have been engaged donors of Judi’s House. From organizing events and fundraising challenges, to serving on committees and volunteering, the Young family shares their gifts in many ways. We are so fortunate to have the Youngs as part of the Judi’s House family. Thank you, Heather, for sharing what giving means to you.
What attracted you to Judi’s House? My mom died of breast cancer when I was 11 years old, leaving me, my older sister, and dad devastated and confused about how to deal with our loss. We did the best we could, but we really had nowhere to turn for help in our grief. When I first learned about Judi’s House mission, “No child should be alone in grief,” I instantly felt that Judi’s House was a mission I wanted to get completely behind. After touring Judi’s House, I knew that this was a place that I wanted to be involved with.
What is your first memory of Judi’s House? My first memory is a lunch that Brian and my dad set up to introduce us to the mission of Judi’s House. From that day forward, we were committed to supporting Judi’s House in as many ways as possible. Over the last decade we have hosted garden parties, dodge ball tournaments, served dinner to families, attended events, served on committees, and have committed financially. Our hearts are full knowing that we can help so many grieving families.
In your opinion, what is the most important work that Judi’s House does? Judi’s House brings people experiencing similar situations together and fosters connection and community that help people on their path to healing. You can feel the love and support in every Judi’s House employee and volunteer.
Why do you give? We give so that other children and families don’t have to experience what is possibly the most difficult time of life, alone. The services offered at Judi’s House and the research at JAG Institute are critical in helping children and families through the grief process.
