We Are All Connected: Joni Jackson- Malavasi

enero 25, 2022

Joni Jackson-Malavasi has volunteered her time and talents at Judi’s House as a Nourishment and Companion Volunteer for the past five years after participating in our programming as a client and intern. Her vast spectrum of experience allows her to form authentic connections with our families, opening her heart to those taking their first steps on their grief journeys. Joni, thank you for your years of service and for supporting others navigating loss.

How did you first become involved with Judi’s House?

After my husband was killed in a climbing accident, I looked for ways to support my children, then 4 and 8 years old.  Judi’s House provided a safe space for all of us to process a very difficult loss and after a few years, I looked for ways to give back.

Tell us about your volunteer role(s).

After our programs ended with Judi’s House, we started to give back by volunteering through Judi’s House nourishment program. It was a wonderful way to stay connected and feel like we were paying it forward. A few years later, I became a Companion Volunteer.

What would you tell someone who is considering volunteering with Judi’s House?

It’s okay to feel like volunteering at Judi’s House might be hard, sad, or difficult.  It could be all those things, but it is also rich and rewarding.  If making a difference drives you, then it is here you will make that difference. Listen to where your heart is guiding you, and it is there you will be successful. Just as Judi’s House believes no child should be alone in their grief, nor should any volunteer feel alone. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

Why do you volunteer?

How could I not? Judi’s House gave my children and me invaluable tools and connections to rely on as we navigated the most challenging journey of our lives. Our grief journey was not made alone. And for that, I will forever be grateful and will constantly look for ways to support Judi’s House in any way I can.
