Judi’s House/JAG Institute & New York Life Foundation unveil CBEM Dashboard, with national and state reports on childhood bereavement rates across the country.

A new report from Judi’s House/JAG Institute and the New York Life Foundation reveals that 1 in 11 U.S. children (6.4 million) will lose a parent or sibling by age 18—a number that grows to 15.5 million by age 25.

Powered by the New York Life Foundation and released as part of the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model® (CBEM), the report includes a first-of-its-kind public dashboard offering detailed data on childhood grief by state, cause of death, race, and more.

The data shows major state-by-state variation: New Mexico has the highest bereavement rate (14.2%), while Utah has the lowest (6.8%). Notably, one-third of parental losses result from accidents, many tied to overdoses.

The CBEM Dashboard was launched at the National Alliance for Children’s Grief Symposium, empowering policymakers and community leaders to address this under-recognized public health issue with data-informed strategies.
