Supporting Grieving Children This National Grief Awareness Week
December 6, 2024
Micki Burns shines a light on childhood bereavement disparities on 9News this Grief Awareness Week.
In honor of National Grief Awareness Week, Micki Burns, CEO of Judi’s House/JAG Institute, was recently featured on 9News to discuss the findings of our latest Key Topic Report. This report highlights an alarming disparity: 1 in 8 children in low-income counties will experience the death of a parent or sibling before age 18, compared to significantly lower rates in higher-income areas. These findings underscore the profound impact socioeconomic factors have on grief experiences and the need for support to prevent the negative outcomes of unaddressed grief.
Micki emphasized the importance of providing compassionate support to grieving children, especially during the holiday season—a time often filled with complex emotions for families navigating loss. Sitting with a grieving child, acknowledging their pain, and offering hope can make a transformative difference.
Small acts of kindness, such as delivering a meal, writing a thoughtful note, or simply being present, can help ease the burden of grief during this difficult time. Micki’s message reminds us that no gesture is too small when it comes to supporting those in need.
At Judi’s House, we believe that every grieving child deserves access to care and resources, regardless of their background. Let this week serve as a call to action: together, we can build a community of understanding, hope, and healing for all children and families.
