A Conversation About Grief with Judi’s House CEO Micki Burns on The Inner Space Project Podcast
March 24, 2026
At Judi’s House, we are always grateful for opportunities to broaden the conversation around childhood grief. Recently, our CEO Micki Burns, PhD, joined The Inner Space Project podcast to share more about our mission, the work of JAG Institute, and the importance of supporting children and families who are navigating grief.
In this “Endings” episode, Dr. Burns speaks with host Dr. Patti Ashley about the emotional complexity of grief and why specialized, compassionate support is essential for children and their families. The conversation highlights how Judi’s House provides and their families. The conversation highlights how Judi’s House provides free, research-informed care designed to help families make meaning, build coping skills, and feel less alone after the death of someone important.

Dr. Burns and Dr. Ashley also discuss insights from the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM), developed by Judi’s House/JAG Institute with philanthropic support from the New York Life Foundation. They highlight a significant finding from the 2025 National CBEM Report: 1 in 11 children in the U. S. will experience the death of a parent or sibling before age 18. Dr. Burns emphasizes the importance of early intervention and how unaddressed grief can affect mental health, relationships, and long-term well-being.
By making this data more accessible, Judi’s House continues to raise awareness of the widespread need for grief-informed care in every community. This conversation reflects our ongoing commitment to direct service, training and education, supported by thorough evaluation and research. We are grateful for opportunities like this one to elevate the voices and experiences of grieving children and caregivers, and to share the essential work happening every day at Judi’s House.
