The Heart of Our Mission: Celebrating Companion Volunteers Rachel Whited Atnip and Sandi Schechter

November 20, 2024

Rachel and Sandi, two Companion Volunteers talk to us about finding fulfillment and purpose in volunteer work.

At Judi’s House, our work wouldn’t be possible without the incredible community of volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to support grieving children and families. Two of these extraordinary individuals are Rachel and Sandi, Companion Volunteers who exemplify what it means to turn compassion into action.

“Volunteering at Judi’s House has been the most rewarding and purposeful commitment I have ever experienced,” says Sandi. “I’ve always worked with parents to help them help themselves, and by doing so, help their children through challenging times. I endeavor to offer them hope and confidence that there is a way forward.”

Sandi highlights how much she has gained personally through her service. “Judi’s House employs the most compassionate and professional program and people I have ever met. Their dedication is incomparable. I am so proud to be a part of the mission.”

Rachel, who began volunteering as a companion volunteer with Judi’s House in last May, shares how the experience has also been personally fulfilling. “Being a [Companion Volunteer] at Judi’s House serves a mutually beneficial purpose for me. It allows me to give back to my fellow community members who have experienced a significant loss, and it gives me the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who also give their time to Judi’s House.”

While the work can sometimes be emotionally challenging, Rachel finds joy in the small moments that remind her why this work is so important. “Hearing many painful stories is not always easy, but seeing a child light up when they spot you across the room makes it 100% worthwhile. I hope the children I work with see that they are never alone in their grief, just as they have made a lasting impact on my life.”

Both Rachel and Sandi agree that Judi’s House creates a community that uplifts not only the families they serve but also the volunteers who support the mission.

“Moving from Nashville to Denver three years ago was quite challenging at times, but being part of Judi’s House has been one of the main highlights,” Rachel reflects. “I truly look forward to each week and always seek more ways to help out. My only complaint is that I have a full-time job that doesn’t allow me to give more time to Judi’s House!”

Volunteers like Rachel and Sandi are the heart of Judi’s House, helping us create a space where no child has to grieve alone. Together, we can create a community that supports healing and hope for families navigating the most challenging times in their lives.
